Quo Vadis Quo Vadis Bookstore was begun by Elmer and Jean Hiebert in 1974 as a non-profit Christian literature ministry in Tempe, Arizona. The original location, on University Drive and Forrest, directly across from Arizona State University, made it easily accessible to students and faculty and general pedestrian traffic. The Hieberts created a warm and loving atmosphere, where all were welcomed. Their love of students, professors, internationals, athletes, those with disabilities, and many other "sub-groups" of the ASU community was expressed in the way they cared for, mentored, and inspired all who came into the store. Outside of Quo Vadis, they were busy with hands-on ministry and friendship to international students, the ASU faculty, chaplaincy to the ASU football and baseball teams, and church planting. Elmer and Jean had a long and fruitful ministry to the ASU community for more than 30 years, and were used by the Lord as a unifying force for many Christian ministries on campus. Elmer and Jean Hiebert, now relocated to Oregon, provide leadership to the International Student Club at Western Oregon State University and help with the International Student Club at Oregon State University, solicit used Christian books and Bibles for shipment overseas, and seek to assist with prayer groups with local pastors and for Missions. Much of their ministry is one-on-one,veral dimensions.
Quo Vadis is a unique bookstore. Elmer and Jean laid a foundation that still holds firm today. All workers, including managers, are volunteers, The rent is covered through the donation of a team of supporters. All books are sold at below retail price. Great Christian literature, including an emphasis on academics, should be highlighted. Bibles in many languages are stocked. And the store is available for prayer meetings and Bible studies whenever possible. Though Quo Vadis has moved to a new location, and looks different than it did 30 years ago, its mission continues to this day. It is now at the crossroads of Lemon and Terrace, just east of ASU, in the heart of "International Village," the most densely populated and diverse neighborhood in Arizona. Ben and Sarah Sanders, the current managers, are volunteers who raise their own financial support and oversee a team of volunteers. The rent is still paid by a team of committed and faithful givers. The store still sells its excellent stock of literature at 20% below retail, including more than 35 C.D. Lewis titles, over 50 missions titles, a huge selection of academic subjects including apologetics, science and faith, theology, and philosophy. And possibly our most unique feature, we stock and sell the Bible in over 80 languages, which we believe is the largest in-store inventory of foreign-language Bibles in the United States. True to its calling as a force for unity in the Body of Christ, Quo Vadis is host to many different ministries throughout the week, including three churches that meet in the store on Sundays. Though Elmer and Jean moved back to their roots in Oregon in 2006, their legacy and influence continues here in Tempe, and far beyond. Visit us at 1037 E.
